TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS

I was asked to write a true meaning article about Christmas day. At the end of the day we all know that Christmas is a christian celebration, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. We all know that the date 25th December was originally a pagan festival. But the reason we celebrate Christmas, and the date we celebrate it on, doesn't matter. Christmas has become a holiday and celebration for not only Christians but non-Christians as well..

Christmas of 1914 saw the unofficial ceasefires that took place along the Western Front around Christmas. German and British soldiers began to exchange seasonal greetings and songs between their trenches; on occasion, the tension was reduced to the point that individuals would walk across to talk to their opposite numbers bearing gifts. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, many soldiers from both sides - as well as, to a lesser degree, the French - independently ventured into No Mans land, where they mingled, exchanging food and souvenirs. As well as joint burial ceremonies, several meetings ended in carol-singing. Troops from both sides had also been so friendly as to play games of football with one another. The truce is seen as a symbolic moment of peace and humanity amidst one of the most violent events of modern history. Unfortunatly a truce like this one, and with the numbers this one had wasn't seen again. That to me is the true meaning of Christmas. To put aside our differnces, and to enjoy a day of peace.

The true meaning of Christmas for me, is to give. Not only presents but love as well. It's a time for my family to gather round and eat, drink, give presents and enjoy each others company, to see the look on the children's faces when they see their presents. The true meaning of Christmas is going to be different for every family, person, household, country and religion. I hope that we can all agree that the true meaning should always be PEACE AND GOOD WILL TO ALL MAN KIND.

From the Kiwi half of Brightside Bincheck, I would like to take this time to wish everyone HAPPY HOLIDAYS or A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.

  1. This 1914 story is a very good one. I also would like to add that Christmas is the celebration of winter, what make it sounding weird at the south hemisphere. I don't know about Oceania but here, after 500 years the European immigrants and their descendants have not yet realized well about that. The real celebration puts men in touch with nature, what at all is the deep meaning of religion, ie, reconnection. Someday I will propose a winter Christmas here. :)
For other ethnic groups and specially native Americans, reconnecting with nature does not make much sense, because they are not disconnected at all.
