Once upon a time we only had to put up with bullying at school, or face to face. Now however it can happen by text, or online. Cyberbullying is a real and happening thing.
A consumer report survey conducted in the United States in early 2011 revealed that, ONE MILLION CHILDREN WERE HARASSED, THREATENED OR SUBJECTED TO OTHER FORMS OF CYBERBULLYING ON FACEBOOK IN THE PAST YEAR.
In the United Kingdon one in 5 (20.5%) of students aged 10 - 11 had been cyberbullied in the past 12 months. These statistics are just the beginning and as shocked as I was at these results, I couldn't find anything that didn't confirm them.
Unfortunatly bullying and suicide in our children is very closly connected.
- A study in Britain found that at least half of suicides among young people are related to bullying
- 10 to 14 year old girls may be at even higher risk forsuicide
- According to statistics reported by ABC News, nearly 30% of students are either bullies or victims of bullying, and 160,000 kids stay at home from school every day because of fear of bullying.
How can we protect our children from the physical and emotional abuse they suffer at the hands of bullies?
Alot of adults say that being bullyed is all part of being a child. Do we tell them to suck it up? Do we say "Ignore them they will go away?" Or how about "Don't be a sissy and fight back?"
Come on people bullying weather it be in the school yard or online HAS TO STOP. This world has enough bullshit going on for our kids to handle without us as the adults sitting back and letting this carry on. Our children are the future of this world lets help them to grow up respecting not only this planet and other people but most importantly THEMSELVES.
